Na Tuini NGAWAI

Nanny Tuini had it right in 1962 when she wrote her famous song ‘Matariki' made famous by her roopu "Te Hokowhitu a Tumatauenga" of Tokomaru Bay, Te Whanau-a-Ruataupare, a famous sub-tribe of Ngatiporou.

This surely denotes how much emphasis our people had placed on Matariki or the Maori New Year Celebrations or Te Tau Hou- "The New Year".

The Maori would plant crops after the first moon of Matariki in June and kohikohi-collect kaimoana and other staple foods in preparation for the upcoming winter months.

Matariki was a time for the sharing of food, stories (purakau) and history (whakapapa) amongst the family and extended families. A time to catch up on all the korero (small talk) and important things happening in the family and tribal circles. A time to farewell our dead and welcome the new born.

It was our holistic cycle of life which kept us wholesome healthy and balanced.

For instance whanau living in Taranaki would head home to the Coast to rekindle and replenish their well-being amongst whanau and friends and this would happen every year, and has been for hundreds of years in "Te Ao Maori"-"the Maori world.

Nowadays things are moving so fast that we are not taking more time-out to be amongst our loved ones. Work and people demand so much of our time that we do not take any opportunities for ourselves and our own well being and that of our families.

We are governed by the clock more and more and the bosses and the managers of huge companies are only concerned about making more money for the shareholders.

Our tamariki (children) living in Australia do not know a lot of our traditions...the parents are too busy or they themselves do not know either.

Hey, that's not a problem! We can all only get better form here on in.

Look inside the words of Nanny Tuini the master composer from the East Coast whose heart was with all Maori to maintain the gospel teachings and to hold steadfast to our traditions.

Kia kaha ra! Be Strong.
